Celebrate KAN’s new ceramics studio with cake on your own handmade plate.
This special event invites you to be a key part of KAN’s ceramics studio launch. Sign up for these 2 workshops and make your own plate and drinking vessel. After shaping, glazing, and firing your unique pieces, you will celebrate the kiln at our public launch event; Cake on a Plate.
By joining these workshops you are helping KAN to raise funds to support our ceramics studio. (The kiln journey has been a big one!) The kiln-launch celebration on 15th August is open to everyone, but there are only 20 places in the workshops.
Join the party and savour a selection of cakes and beverages while dining from your handmade ceramics, making the experience both personal and memorable. Whether you’re celebrating your first pottery project or adding another piece to your collection, Cake on a Plate is a great way to appreciate the beauty of handmade objects, good food, and shared moments with fellow makers.
Session 1: 2 – 4pm Saturday August 1
Trainers: Risa Herman and Janaka McGeary with Isla Birnie
This hands-on workshop is perfect for beginners and experienced makers alike, offering a creative introduction to one of the most versatile pottery techniques.
Begin by rolling an even clay slab and then shape the clay into a functional plate and a drinking vessel with a small stem, refining the edges and smoothing the surface to achieve a professional finish.
Once the forms are complete, you can personalise them with decorative techniques. Throughout the session, you’ll receive step-by-step demonstrations and individual guidance to help bring your design to life. After the workshop, your plate and cup will remain at the studio to dry slowly before being bisque fired.

Session 2: 5.30 – 7.30pm Tuesday 11 August

Return to the KAN shed and check out your fired plate, and complete it with a glaze. Your pieces will be fired a second time to produce a durable, food-safe ceramic piece.
Return to the KAN Shed on Saturday 15th August to collect your finished works and join us for the official launch of KAN’s new Ceramics Shed. You can put some cake on your new plate, have a drink from your new cup and enjoy the bar, music and lots of other people and ceramics to join the fun
