An altar is a place of connection with another realm. Many religions use an altar in their worship, and a personal altar is a place of connection, a focus for prayer and for remembering.
Ceramicist Rowena Harries has created a myriad of altars using many different ceramic techniques and styles. In this 2 session series, she will guide you through the process of designing your altar based on the meaning it has for you. It can be religious, spiritual or decorative, including for example religious figures, saints, family members who have passed away, elemental forces (fire, air, water, earth) and nature.
Session 1: 1 – 3pm Saturday, 19 September
In the first workshop, we will discuss the uses of personal altars. You will choose the focus of your altar and what images you would like to include. The altars will be made of clay and decorated with pressed markings and underglaze painting. They will be small (about 10 cm high) and can be freestanding.
The pieces will then be set aside to dry slowly, and will be bisque-fired.
In Session 2, 1 – 3pm Saturday, 3 October
After the bisque firing, you will return for the second session and the altars will be glazed. KAN has a range of glaze options that will make your work a unique piece. The Altars will then be glaze fired.
