‘We Walk Together’ is two exhibitions representing Kimberley Artists for the Regional Arts Triennial in both Kununurra and Broome. Contemporary work by 25 artists was created especially for this prestigious statewide program, and is launching at The Octagon .  

The exhibition will also be on show at the Library at Notre Dame in Broome from Saturday 27th. The Triennial theme is Radical Futures. It’s been developed by Lead Curator Sarah Roots to challenge artists to consider how we move forward in ‘interesting times’:  What might our future look like? Can we forge our own direction? Can we build a sustainable future for our communities?   ‘Radical Futures’ is a thread that connects 14 exhibitions across regional Western Australia, and in the Kimberley, our Indigenous curatorial team has selected 25 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to create works that offer a Kimberley Future vision, entitled We Walk Together.  Dora Griffiths, Kimberley curator says “On this project, I am working cross-culturally and have developed a deeper appreciation of the many stories being told by artists across the region.”  We’ll be having a chat with Dora and the curatorial team on Sunday at 10 at the Notre Dame Library. The WA Regional Arts Triennial is a regionally-led capacity building cycle of creative development to strengthen confidence, capability and connectivity in WA’s regional visual arts sector.The 3 year Triennial cycle is a series of professional development opportunities for regional artists, arts-workers and arts organisations. It builds networks of support and exchange, embeds creative career pathways for artists and curators, and showcases WA’s unique regional identity.  The program is not limited to artists, but also gives opportunities for others interested in creative industries.  In Broome, Art on the Move is running the ’Gallery Fundamentals” Training program for 2 days.  This is an introduction to mounting an exhibition and involves practical skills and exhibition design.

While the Kimberley is a vibrant creative community, with a number of high-profile Indigenous Art Centres and some of the most successful artists in Australia. Currently, the region lacks public gallery space.  In Broome the exhibition will be split across two separate sites.

The Regional Arts Triennial 3: Radical Futures is funded by the WA Government. It is coordinated by Southern Forest Arts with support from ART ON THE MOVE through the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost. Project partners include John Curtin Gallery, Regional Arts WA, GalleriesWest and the Kimberley Arts Network.
