art above the 26th is an exhibition of new works by established artists who live and work above the 26th parallel. While the latitude line defines the geographic edge of ‘the North, ’ it also comes with an attitude; a creative and adventurous grit that has its own character and vernacular.

The Kimberley Arts Network and the Broome Civic Centre partner to present this annual survey show to showcase the styles, stories and talent of our northern artists.

PARTICIPATION: Artists/Art Centres are offered 6 metres of space. Artists can submit several works to showcase their oeuvre, or the diversity of the art centre’s group of artists.

The Shinju Art Awards are a highlight of Broome’s annual Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl. Each year, artists from across the Kimberley enter one work into this showcase of regional creative talent. There are a number of categories and winners are judged by leading industry representatives and professional artists. The best work is acquired by the Shire of Broome for its permanent collection, which includes works from over 50 years of Broome’s heritage.

The theme for the 2024 – 2027 Triennial is ‘Radical Futures’, and across regional WA, 15 exhibitions are mounted between August 2025 and March 2026. The Kimberley was fortunate to host two exhibitions; in Kununurra and Broome in September 2025, incorporating works from the entire Kimberley region.

The Triennial program envisages a thriving and sustainable WA regional visual arts sector, enlivening local communities, respected across state and national contexts. The regional exhibitions contribute to a selective exhibition and symposium at John Curtin Gallery in Perth in September 2026.

Alongside the exhibitions, capacity building and community engagement programs increase the impact of the program beyond the exhibition itself. KAN hosted A Radical Futures ‘Divinations’ event during the Fringe Festival with artists Bernadette Trench-Thiedeman and Kat Selena. And project partner Art on the Move delivered their Gallery Fundamentals program when installing the Broome exhibition, growing local skills for exhibition and collections handling.
